Why I am thinking to leave Malta : An Honest Reflection on a New Beginning
Malta has been my home base for several years, and I can honestly say that I had a good time living there. The island offers a unique mix of Mediterranean charm, a warm climate, and a strong expat community. The Maltese people are welcoming and friendly, and the culture is fascinating.
In many ways, Malta has been a great place for me to work and enjoy life.
However, recently I have started thinking about the possibility of leaving Malta. This is not an easy decision, and it is something I am still thinking about carefully. There are several reasons that make me question whether staying long term is the right choice for me.
One factor is the increasing crowding on the island. Malta has become very popular with tourists and expats, and places that used to feel quiet and relaxed are now often busy and crowded. This can affect the quality of daily life and sometimes makes simple things feel more stressful.
The cost of living has also increased a lot, especially rent. In areas like St. Julian’s, Gżira, or Sliema, I often paid more than €1,200 per month for a small flat. If you only stay there a few months a year, as I did, it can become quite expensive for digital nomads. Paying high rent for a place you rarely use does not always make sense in the long run.
On a personal level, I also experienced a difficult situation. I became a victim of a digital scam, which had a strong impact on my personal circumstances. It was a tough experience and made me reflect more about my future and where I want to build the next chapter of my life.
Beyond my personal situation, I have also noticed some broader changes. Europe, including Malta, seems to be becoming more bureaucratic and regulated, especially for freelancers. For independent professionals, this can sometimes feel more limiting than supportive.
Because of all these factors, I have started exploring other places outside of Europe that might offer new opportunities and a different lifestyle. At the moment, I am still thinking things through and weighing my options.
Leaving Malta is not a final decision yet, and I still appreciate the great memories and the wonderful people I met here. But sometimes it is important to stay open to change and new possibilities. A new chapter might bring new growth, new experiences, and new opportunities..
