Why I Left Malta finally: An Honest Reflection on a New Beginning

Malta has been my home base for several years, and I can honestly say I had a good time living there. The island offers a unique blend of Mediterranean charm, a warm climate, and a nice expat community. The Maltese people are welcoming and friendly, on top the maltese culture is really fascinating.

In many ways, Malta felt like a good place to work and enjoy life.

However, despite these positive experiences, I decided to leave Malta. This decision wasnt easy, nor was it made lightly. There are several authentic reasons behind my choice, rooted in both personal circumstances and broader concerns.

One major factor was the increasing crowding on the island. Malta has become a hotspot for tourists and expats alike, and the once quiet streets and beaches are now often packed. This growing density impacts the quality of life, making everyday activities less enjoyable and more stressful.

The cost of living in Malta has also risen, especially the rent prices. I usually paid over 1,200 euros a month for a small flat in St. Julians, Gzira, or Sliema. If you only use the flat a few months a year like I did, it can be very expensive for digital nomads. Paying high prices for a place you don’t use often does not make sense in the long run.

On a personal level, I faced a significant setback. I fell victim to a digital scam that severely affected my personal situation dramatically.

This was a tough blow and made me realize I need a fresh start, somewhere else where I can find stability and freedom without the growing pressure I felt in Malta.

Beyond my personal challenges, I’ve noticed some broader issues that influenced my decision too. Europe, so including Malta, is becoming increasingly bureaucratic and restrictive, especially for freelancers like myself. The EU’s tightening regulations and administrative hurdles feel like growing obstacles rather than support systems. For independent professionals, this shift makes it harder to thrive and maintain the freedom that initially drew many of us here.

In the end, I believe there are other places out of Europe that offer a better environment for living and working. a place where I can embrace new opportunities without the heavy weight of bureaucracy and overcrowding.

Leaving Malta doesn’t mean I have forgotten the good times or the wonderful people I met. It simply means I’m ready for a new chapter, a fresh beginning filled with hope and potential. Sometimes, moving on is the best way to grow.
